Do you belong?

Strange question! Of course I belong! But where do I belong?

By nationality I am Czech. I was born in Praha, where I went to primary school, then secondary and with a “gap year” to uni. My “gap year” was unwanted, I just wasn’t accepted first time … it was not the “gap year” described in Wikipedia as “a sabbatical year during which students engage in various educational and developmental activities”, although by working as a unskilled worker in a garden-husbandry I realized I want to do something more challenging.

These were the times of black-and-white perception of the world, Iron Curtain dividing Europe into two separate areas, eastern newspapers reporting about bad imperialists … then came the year 1989, the Berlin Wall fell and at last, we, easterners, were able to travel freely, without the need to ask for a permission and a bit of foreign currency. What a joy! We were even able to live and work abroad … and learn languages, the condition for a succesfull blending in the local community.

Now there is a pandemic. Czech borders are closed again, because “we” don’t deal succesfully with the crisis … the only relieve being, that the whole world is dealing with covid as well and we can learn from each other. I guess everyone hopes, the vaccination will be effective and our lives will be able to return to “normal” soon.

Just yesterday I found this “Better mad with the rest of the world then wise alone” t-shirt and I can’t agree more. .

Relativita ... aneb pohled z druhé strany

Myslím, že všichni takovou situaci znáte … a pokud jste do loňského roku neměli tu čest, poznali jste ji díky koronaviru. Osud, o němž doktor Vlach z knihy Saturnin od Zdeňka Jirotky říká:

“Prožíváme-li delší dobu idylu, přestaneme ji vnímat a osud by nám prokázal neocenitelnou službu, kdyby nás popadl za límec a vyhodil dočasně na mráz. Pak bychom nevzpomínali na to, že kamna trochu kouřila, nýbrž na to, že hřála. A na to, že bylo ostatně v naší moci aby jenom hřála. “

Ačkoliv první část o idyle, kterou jsme přestali vnímat či spíše začali považovat za samozřejmost je minimálně v Evropě skutečná – přes 75 let žijeme v míru -ne vždy je v moci jednotlivce zajistit, aby idyla pokračovala. A aby byla celosvětová, stejně jako je současná pandemie.

Fráze jako “jsme v tom společně” a “společně to zvládneme” vždycky vyvolají otázku: “a kdo jsme vlastně my?”.

Lékaři, zdravotníci a pomocný zdravotnický personál? Policie, vojsko a další státní zaměstnanci? Majitelé restaurací a penziónů a jejich zaměstnanci? Herci? Děti, které se připravují na život distanční výukou? Pracující v různých oborech, na různých pozicích? Důchodci, kteří mají větší část života za sebou, ale kus ještě před sebou? Obyvatelé Evropy? Ameriky? Asie? Lidé, kteří umí anglicky? Německy? Španělsky? … Současní obyvatelé zeměkoule?

Všechny nás ovlivňuje koronavirová krize, se kterou se vlády v různých zemích vyrovnávají různě, střídavě omezují a uvolňují provozy, zavírají a otevírají obchody … a někteří členové pak podkopávají autoritu vlády, v níž sami sedí. Zajdou si do “zavřené” restaurace na “pracovní schůzku”, zajedou si k moři, když je doporučeno nikam nejezdit … novináři všech zemí by jistě mohli vyprávět, ale hned se na ně někdo naštve, že to je kampaň a že vytvářejí paniku.

Ryba smrdí od hlavy. Smradu ryby by možná pomohlo hlavu useknout a vyhodit. Ale co s vládou, kde se ministři střídají jako apoštolové na orloji? Taková “hlava” se nedá useknout, zvlášť když je demokraticky zvolená.

Až pandemie ustoupí, budeme vzpomínat.

Každý podle toho, v jaké životní fázi a na jakém místě na zeměkouli se v jejím průběhu nacházel. Ale tady a teď se dějí i jiné věci a je žádoucí, aby si každý z nás udržoval rovnováhu mezi činností fyzickou, duševní a odpočinkem. Tak můžeme zvýšit pravděpodobnost, že se přání “kéž by nás pánbu při zdravém rozumu zachovati ráčil” uskuteční.

The post’s title sounds scientifically, but I think we all do it. We experiment, fail, learn and repeat the whole life. Since our birth. And it is the right thing to do. The world is not steady and our knowledge is limited. Even the AI (artificial intelligence) needs to learn new contexts.

So let’s experiment, fail, learn and repeat. We all need to learn new things, whatever age we are. We can’t completely rely on the robots and we can’t behave like robots. Every human being has got a brain, so let’s use them.
