Po pár letech ...

Po pár letech přidávám pár aktuálních informací -

v průběhu dosavadního pobytu v UK jsem zahájila proces registrace mezinárodní knihovny (v rámci občanského sdružení Library Kebharec o.s.), která bude obsahovat převážně anglické knihy (získané od britských charit, spolků a občanů), ale věřím, že se mi postupně podaří získat i knihy v jiných jazycích.

Současně probíhají i práce na budově, které mi umožní dlouhodobější pobyt a možnost se seznamovat s okolím a jeho obyvateli. Věřím, že to bude doba zajímavá, naplněná množstvím nových zážitků a nápadů.

Years on ...

After some time I decided to add some news about the progress -
while still living in the UK, I'm in the process of registering the international library (as a part of civic association Library Kebharec o.s) that would contain mainly books in English (acquired mainly from British charities, associations and citizens), though - over the months/years I hope to be able to get books in other languages.

In the same time a part of the building is being renovated to allow me (and to stay there for a while and familiarize myself with the local countryside and the community. I trust the time will be full of new and exciting challenges.

King Abdulah University of Science and Technology (KAUST)

I could just leave the link to KAUST here and let you browse their website, but I've got the urge to add some of my first impressions (it's about 2 weeks I'm here) which are - believe it or not - quite positive.

The University officially opened in September 2009 in the presence of its founder King Abdullah (see Al Jazeera's report on YouTube) and although there is still ongoing building works in the campus, it does not interfere with everyday life (most of it being done behind the barbed wire).

Apart from the University buildings the campus includes also the housing for faculty members, staff and students, schools (from early childhood centers to the age of 18), commercial centers (shops that provide for food and the daily used items as well as the canteen and a few restaurants) and other community services (including regular shuttle buses around the campus, but also to some distant places and shopping malls) and last but not least the recreational facilities (especially well equipped sport center and the libraries are much appreciated by myself). Being at the seaside (Red sea) the campus has its own beach with the white sand from the Spain and a marina with yacht and sailing facilities. As you can see the campus is very well prepared for 'the life in a bubble' :)

As is the case with all new places you can find it somewhat tricky at times - the other day we needed help as the stove was giving me shocks (maybe it tried to tell me not to cook :)), but the maintenance team came within 1/2 hour to join the wires properly.

In no case should I forget to mention the Museum of Science and Technology in Islam that in a catching and absorbing way celebrates the contributions of Muslim scholars to the science and technology during the first Golden Age of Islam from the 7th to 17th century. Just to read and digest the information there would take me few weeks.

Univerzita vědy a techniky krále Abdullaha

Mohla bych tu nechat jen odkaz na stránky KAUSTu, abyste se jimi sami pročetli, cítím však potřebu podělit se o něco prvních dojmů, které jsou - věřte nebo ne - vcelku pozitivní.

Univerzita byla oficiálně otevřena za přítomnosti krále Abdullaha v září 2009 (viz. záznam Al Jazeery na YouTube) a přestože se v areálu stále pilně buduje, nebrání to běžnému každodennímu životu (většina stavebních prací se odehrává za plotem).

Kromě universitních budov areál obsahuje domy pro profesory, vědce a studenty, školy (od mateřských po střední školy do 18ti let), obchodní centra (obchody s jídlem a základními každodenními potřebami, ale i jídelna a několik restaurací) a jiné služby (včetně pravidelných autobusových linek v rámci areálu a do obchodních center v okolí), v neposlední řadě a rekreační vybavení (zvláště si užívám dobře vybavené sportovní centrum a knihovny). Jelikož je areál na pobřeží Rudého moře, má i vlastní pláž, kam byl dovezen bílý písek přímo ze Španělska, a přístav. Jak vidíte, areál je dost dobře připraven pro 'život v bublině' :)

Jak už je obvyklé, na nově vznikajících místech se občas vyskytne nějaký ten problémek - tuhle jsem například vařila a poklice mi začaly dávat rány (možná se mi snažily sdělit ať nevařím :)), takže Martin zavolal údržbáře. Přijeli téměř vzápětí, zjistili, že sporák nebyl uzemněn a závadu odstranili.

KAUST má i vlastní Museum vědy a technologie v Islamu, které poutavým způsobem přibližuje přínos Muslimských vědců v období Zlatého věku Islámu (7.-17.století). Jen přečtení a poslech všech materiálů by mi zabralo několik týdnů, fascinující jsou modely různých pump, časových strojků či větracího systému budov.

Nezapomenutelným (a nepřehlédnutelným) bodem areálu je mešita. Její modrozlatá kopule a věže minaretu jsou viditelné odevšad a 5krát za den se z ní areálem rozléhá výzva k modlitbám.

How was the weekend? ... well (geo)caching :)

... and noone who knows Martin is surprised. It was my second weekend in Saudi Arabia (well weekend ... Thursday and Friday, but these are free here and Saturday and Sunday are workdays) so it was more than logical to go and explore local geocaches.
To those who do not know about geocaching I recommend to have a look at www.geocaching.com to understand what I'm talking about.
(my explanation - naturally I'm kidding - is that it was started by someone with too much advertisement junk so he started to put it into the boxes around the world :) ... on the other hand we would not come to several lovely and interesting places we got thanks to geocaching)

So on Saturday (oh no, on Thursday :)) we started with the cache Jeddah to Madinah. It is approx. 50 km from KAUST, not far from the road connecting Makkah and Medinah. The colorful blur (which is what you see from the car going under the speed limit 120 km/h) though more or less umber (or the color of the sand) was quite interesting - I still can't tire myself of the 2-languages traffic signs and the varied towers of minarets. We've met also a few Bedouins and some herds of camels (out of the main road).

On Friday we went to the South to Jeddah region to look for the cache No stone unturned. This time we've seen a part of the town (from the road, we'll explore it another day), more minarets, car cemetery (a huge space full of wreckage), a few sort of holiday parks (it looks like funfair next to the road with adjacent hostel) and naturally a loads of further traffic signs. After turning most of the stones on the spot (though the right one was unturned among the first few) Martin found the cache and as our predecessor (November 2008) we laughed out loud when we realized :) (sorry for not being more specific, I don't want to spoil the fun for others :))

Jaký byl víkend? ... inu (geo)kešový

... a kdo zná Martina se ani moc nediví. Byl to můj druhý víkend v Saudské Arábii (tedy víkend ... čtvrtek a pátek, ale tady volné dny, v sobotu a v neděli se naopak pracuje), takže bylo celkem logické, že se podíváme na ty 2 keše, které tu v okolí jsou. Neznáte-li geocaching, doporučuji odbočit na stránky www.geocaching.cz (česky) nebo www.geocaching.com (anglicky) a dozvědět se, co to vlastně je.

(mé vysvětlení - které samozřejmě nikomu nevnucuju :) - je, že ho vymyslel někdo, komu se doma vrstvily reklamní blbosti a jelikož mu bylo líto je jen tak vyhodit, začal je ukládat do krabiček po světě. Kdo mě zná, ví, že občas dost přeháním ... takže musím také přiznat, že jsme se díky geocachingu dostali i do hezkých a zajímavých míst, kam bychom jinak asi nejeli)


V sobotu (tedy vlastně ve čtvrtek :)) jsme tedy vyrazili za keší Jeddah to Madinah. Je asi 50 km od KAUSTu, nedaleko silnice spojující Mekku a Medinu. Barevná šmouha (tedy to, co člověk vidí z auta při maximální povolené rychlosti 120 km/hod) ač převážně žlutohnědá byla poměrně zajímavá - stále se nemůžu nabažit dvojjazyčných cedulí a různorodých věžiček minaretů. Potkávali jsme i beduíny a stáda velbloudů (ty spíše mimo hlavní silnici).


V pátek jsme pak vyrazili na jih do oblasti Jeddahu za keší No stone unturned. Cestou jsme tentokrát viděli i kus města (ze silnice, blíže ho prozkoumáme jindy), další minarety, hřbitov aut (rozlehlá plocha s vraky aut), pár zábavních parků (taková Matějská pouť někde u silnice, ale je u ní i hotel či boudičky pro prázdninový pobyt) a samozřejmě další desítky cedulí. Keš Martin po otočení téměř všech kamenů (i když ten pravý byl otočen jako jeden z prvních) v okolí našli a stejně jako náš předchůdce (listopad 2008) jsme se smáli až domů když nám to došlo. :) (podrobnosti na požádání těm, kteří se v žádném případě nechystají keš hledat :))

Fotky z obou výletů by se měly během pár dnů objevit na Martinově rajčeti, postupně i na mém.

Je sobota (tedy čtvrtek, ale místní sobota) tak vyrážíme za keší GCWM4T. Zpravodajství bude následovat.

Život v universitním areálu

Tak jsme tady, asi tak týden poté co jsem dorazila do Saudské Arábie.

Máme tu pronajatý domek (popis viz Martinův blog) v universitním areálu, přímo proti sportovnímu centru. Toto umístění je velice prospěšné neb využíváme poskytovaného vybavení poměrně dost (rozličná ranní cvičení při hudbě, bazén, kuželky, squash, posilovací zařízení ... pro mne, vyrostlou na žíněnkách, je to nebe na zemi :)).

Po vstupu do domu si chvíli připadáte jako v menší nádražní hale - prostor, vysoké stropy, světlé dlaždice ... máme tak zajištěná stání pro kola. Taky pračka, sušička a lednice by se lépe hodily rodině s pěti a více členy, pro nás dva je to trochu přepych, stejně jako několik velkých koupelen a záchodů (což jsem si kdysi přála neb po ránu není koupelen nikdy dost :)).
Nahoru chodíme po schodišti s 24 schody, takže i doma máme trochu toho cvičení neb počítač je nahoře (i když mě občas napadne, jestli se například bez toho pití ještě chvíli neobejdu :)).
V domě je i několik klimatizačních systémů, poměrně hlučných, takže je nepoužíváme stále ... a možná tomu nebudete věřit, ale tuhle mi doma bylo chladno.

Život v areálu se podobá našim předchozím štacím - společenství lidí shromážděných za určitým účelem (zde práce pro universitu) s různými možnostmi zapojit se do života mimo areál.
Prostředí zde pro mě neočekávaně spojuje místa, kde jsme dosud žili:

• práce je unikátní (pro zavádějící se universitu, která bude poskytovat vzdělání ve vědě a technice zájemcům z celého světa s cílem podpořit spolupráci ve světe - podobně jako tomu bylo v EBI (European Bioinformatics Institute) a v IRRI (International Rice Research Institute))
• areál je vybaven tím základním, co pracující člověk potřebuje - dobrou jídelnou a zázemím k rekreaci - jako tomu bylo v genetickém areálu (Genome Campus - EBI)
• "život v bublině" je tu - snad díky podnebí - podobný Filipínám, kde byl Martin do prosince. Nějak nejsme zvyklí na trvale vysoké teploty.
• a je tu dokonce i hodně Filipínců, kteří tu pracují jako pomocníci v domácnostech, zahradníci, ve sportovním centru ... a je příjemné zas slyšet jejich typické "Mo'nin' Mam"

Universita otevřela své brány vloni v září a základní část areálu už je hotová (tedy universitní budovy s přednáškovými sály, laboratořemi, učebnami), stále však probíhají různé dodělávky v domech pro zaměstnance i výstavba domů nových. Stavby jsou od obývaného prostoru odděleny plotem, takže je možné například sledovat romantický západ slunce přes ostnatý drát. ... konečně nikdo není dokonalý, že? :)

Life in the campus

So here we are, just about a week after I came to Saudi Arabia.

So we have a rented house (I would not need to add much to Martin's description were it written in English :)) in the university campus just opposite of the Harbor Sport Centre. This location proves to be quite beneficial as we use the facilities a lot (different exercise classes, swimming pool, bowling, squash, gym).

The house is semi-detached. It has 2 stories - downstairs there is the kitchen, living room (with the casement (French) door to the terrace and little garden), maid room (with the bathroom), WC, pantry for the washing machine and dryer (both big, American style), a huge entrance hall (very unlike ours in Britain, Martin calls is railway station and I second to that :)) that we use as a parking place for the bikes; upstairs there are 2 bedrooms each with a double bed and a big separate bathroom (it is ridiculous a bit, I always wanted a big bathroom and now we have several of them :)) and a terrace.
The two floors are connected by stairs (24 steps) so we get some exercise even inside the house while fetching coffee or some fruit from the kitchen (the computer is in a bedroom upstairs :)).
There are several air conditioning systems in the house, but they get quite noisy, so I try not to use them too much ... and believe it or not the other day I felt cold here.

The life in the campus is similar to all those we lived before - community connected by the main purpose (here working for the university) having different possibilities to connect to the world outside.
The environment quite surprisingly connects for me the places we've been before:

• the work is unique (for the University aiming to provide education in science and technology for both men and women coming from around the world - for more see their Vision and Mission) with the objection to help people globally - similar to the EBI (European Bioinformatics Institute) and that to IRRI (International Rice Research Institute)
  
• it also has similar facilities for well being of the staff (the cantine, the sport centre) to those at the Genome Campus (EBI)
  
• the 'living in a bubble' part here is - thanks to the weather - similar to the Philippines where Martin worked before. We are simply not used to the heat and tend to choose the recreational activities inside.
• and there are actually a lot of Filipinos working here as helpers, gardeners, in the sport centre ... and it is nice to hear the typical "Mo'nin' Mam" I used to hear while visiting Martin in the Philippines

Výlet do Taifu

Taif je město v provincii Mecca v Saudské Arábii, položené vysoko v horách (1,879 m) s více než 1/2 milionem obyvatel. Vzhledem k příznivému podnebí se sem z Riyadhu každé léto stěhuje vláda.

Taif byl cílem našeho čtvrtečního výletu pořádaného místní cestovní agenturou.

Navštívili jsme:

• továrnu, kde se z květů růže destiluje růžová (ve smyslu z růží, ne barevně) voda a olej, používané v kosmetice, ale i jako přísada do různých sladkostí a nápojů
  
• místo, kde je možné spatřit paviány, jsou hezcí, ale průvodce říkal, že už se přemnožili a mohou být nebezpeční
• lanovku, pod kterou se kroutí nově postavená silnice z Taifu do Mekky a u jejíž spodní stanice je bazén s různými atrakcemi
• městské muzeum v paláci Shubra, bývalém letním sídle krále Abdula Azize

Pro mě to byla také první možnost seznámení s životem mimo universitní kampus a příležitost vyzkoušet si abáju (arabské šaty pro ženy).

Trip to Taif

Taif is a city in the Mecca province in Saudi Arabia quite high up in the mountains (1,879 m = 6,165 ft) with over half million inhabitants. Each summer Saudi government moves here from Riyadh.

It was the destination of our trip on Thursday provided by local travel agency.

We visited

• the rose distillery, producing rose water and oil used in cosmetics but also as an ingredient in some sweets and drinks.
• the site where you can see baboons in the nature, they look quite cute though apparently their large numbers are causing some problems too
• the cable car with newly built highway road to Mecca underneath and the swimming pool and other attractions near the bottom station
  

• the city's museum in Shubra palace, the former summer residence of King Abdul Aziz

It was also a nice introduction to the life outside the campus for me and the first time I used the abaya just without the head scarf.

Jak jsem se dostala do Saudske Arabie

Normální běh života - aspoň jsem si to myslela - začíná narozením (které neovlivníte), pokračuje dětstvím (které obvykle trávíte s rodiči a sourozenci ať se vám to líbí či nikoliv), studiemi, pracovním životem v produktivním věku, vlastním rodinným životem (všechny tyto etapy můžete - nebo si alespoň myslíte, že můžete - ovlivnit) a ke konci produktivního života (příprava na penzi) směřujete do krajů vašeho dětství a mládí, protože vzpomínky na ně jsou stále zřetelnější a chcete dohonit, co vám tam uniklo (já to alespoň tak cítím).

My jsme se narodili v období komunistické totality v Československu (na rozdíl od demokracie, kde je ve volbách trochu rozmanitosti, měli komunisté vždy 99%). Bylo tehdy velmi těžké dostat povolení k cestě do zahraničí (což nás bavilo), takže když se po sametové revoluci otevřela možnost práce v zahraničí a Martin dostal nabídku z DKFZ, Heidelberg, příliš jsme neváhali a v roce 1992 jsme na 1,5 roku přestěhovali do Něměcka - a zůstali tam 4 roky - pak jsme se přesunuli na počáteční 3letou smlouvu EBI, Hinxton, UK (kde jsem pracovala též). Teď tedy stále bydlíme v Anglii, ale mezitím byl Martin zaměstnán na Filipínách (IRRI) a teď má zaměstnání v Universitě krále Abdullaha (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology - KAUST) poblíž Jeddahu v Saudské Arabii.

A tak jsme tady.

Ho I got to Saudi Arabia

The usual way of life - at least I thought so - goes from the birth (which you can't influence), through the childhood (which you usually spend with the parents whether you like it or not), some studies, production age, your own family life (all of these you can - or think you can - influence) and towards the end of production life (or for the retirement) you head to the place of your childhood as the memories of those are much clearer and you (me anyway :)) want to catch up with the life back home.

We were born in Czechoslovakia during the totality of communism (unlike in democracy, where there is a diversity in the elections, the communists always had 99%). It was very hard to get the permission to travel (which we both liked) so after the velvet revolution (1989), when Martin got the first chance to work abroad (DKFZ, Heidelberg) we didn't hesitate too much and in 1992 we moved for 1.5 year to Germany - and stayed 4 years - then for the initial 3 years contract to EBI, Hinxton, UK (I worked there too). As for now we are still based in England just in between Martin worked in the Philippines (IRRI) and now he got a position in the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) near Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.

And here we are just now.
